Exercise and talking helps people with depression, according to one expert.
Jenny Armitage of Journeys Toward Recovery said that the type of exercise depends on what the individual feels ready to do whether this is going out for a walk, walking the dog or going jogging.
Additionally, Ms Armitage said that talking is also important when recovering from depression.
"Obviously a professional person will be able to offer different techniques and options that a family member might not be able to but talk with anybody can help," she said.
This comes after a study published by Shift found that despite improvements in the past few years, prime time drama still does not portray mental illness accurately.
It was found that 45 per cent of peak-time programmes with mental illness storylines portrayed people with mental health issues as a threat to other people.
In addition, 63 per cent of references to mental health were flippant, unsympathetic or pejorative.
