NHS urged to focus on quality of patient care

Health secretary Andrew Lansley has said that the NHS must focus more on the quality of results for patients instead of cost.
Speaking at the Maximising Quality, Minimising Cost conference, he said that changing the default in decision making within the NHS and handing more power to GPs is about giving patients and commissioners more of a choice.
"Our plans to modernise the NHS will finally bring the power of competition to healthcare. Not a free-for-all race to the bottom, but a race for quality, for excellence and for efficiency," he said.
He added that the new system will combat the 'postcode lottery', ending unfair variation in the health service.
This comes after a survey by Which? found that older people are subject to a 'postcode lottery' in terms of home care as hourly rates vary around the country, with some councils offering the service free and others charging up to £20 per hour.
