Hospitals that put patients in mixed sex accommodation will be fined £250 per patient from April, health secretary Andrew Lansley has said.
This announcement follows the publication of figures on mixed sex accommodation that found a total of 11,362 patients were put in this type of ward during December 2010.
It was also found that 92 per cent of all breaches took place in acute hospital trusts and this happened with a frequency of 8.1 per 1,000 hospital stays.
Additionally, NHS North West was found to have the highest breach rate with 13 while NHS Yorkshire and Humber had the lowest with 1.2.
Mr Lansley said: "By April, we expect every hospital to be capable of meeting the single sex accommodation standard. And so from April 1st we are introducing £250 fines for every time a hospital has concerns that a patient's dignity is not respected in this way."
This comes after research by California's St Michael Hospital showed that patients who undergo kidney dialysis at home following a failed kidney transplant are just as likely to survive as those who have it in hospital.
