Heart UK is emphasising the importance of a healthy died in reducing the risk of coronary disease and other circulatory problems.
Linda Main, dietetic advisor for Heart UK, has said that although it has been known for some time that a healthy diet is key in avoiding serious heart problems, recent studies have illuminated just how important it can be.
"This is not only because of the beneficial nutrients contained in fruit and vegetables themselves - vitamins, minerals, fibre, antioxidants and other plant nutrients - but because of nutrients they do not contain like fats, particularly saturated fat and salt," she said.
Data from the Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) Heart study revealed that people who ate at least eight portions of fruit and vegetables per day had a 22 per cent lower risk of dying from ischemic heart disease than those who consumed fewer than three portions per day.
