A total of £20 million has been invested into microbiology and trauma research, intended to improve treatment of victims of major trauma and likely to create a number of biomedical science jobs.
University Hospitals Birmingham and University of Birmingham along with the Department of Health and the Ministry of Defence, are planning to bring both military and civilian trauma surgeons and scientists together to share lessons learned.
The new National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) for surgical reconstruction and microbiology will focus on effective resuscitation techniques, surgical care after multiple injuries or amputation and fighting wound infections.
NIHR will be set up at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, which is the location at which all injured military personnel are treated after evacuation from Afghanistan.
This comes after health secretary Andrew Lansley announced a new cancer initiative, which aims to save 5,000 lives per year by 2014/15.
Improving Outcomes - A Strategy for Cancer aims to diagnose cancer earlier, help people lead healthier lives, screen more people and improve treatment.
