Register as an Dietitian
Wednesday 19th January 2011
Five portions of fruit and vegetables per day may not be enough to protect the heart, new research has revealed.
Findings from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) Heart study show that eight pieces of fruit and veg a day may be needed to cut the risk of dying from heart disease.
Researchers investigated the diet and lifestyles of over 300,000 people in eight counties and found that those who ate at least eight portions per day had 22 per cent less chance of dying from heart disease than those who consumed just three portions.
Each extra portion was found to lower the risk of death by an additional four per cent.
This comes after a study, published in the Lancet, discovered two genes linked to heart disease that could help those at risk of cardiac conditions. An association between the ABO blood group gene and heart disease was also found.
