NHS reforms 'must not jeopardise mental health care'

NHS reforms must not risk the treatment of those with mental health issues, a charity has said.
Mental health charity Mind has said that the localisation of the NHS could jeopardise the quality and continuity of treatment in the field.
This comes after the cross-party Health Select Committee found that the plans for the NHS would cause "significant institutional upheaval" without really changing its aims.
Mind chief executive Paul Farmer said that past experience has taught that mental health services often bear the brunt of cuts to the health budget and that this should not be allowed to happen again.
"There is a real risk that valuable mental health knowledge and skills could be lost in the transition process and that some mental health services will be vulnerable to closure or disruption," he said.
Meanwhile, the government has announced that dementia research is to get a financial boost, with the aim of gaining a better understanding into the disease to help sufferers and their families.
