Older people are in need of targeted exercise including strength training, balance and flexibility, according to one expert.
Vicky Johnston, specialist physiotherapist in falls prevention for the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy said that this form of exercise would improve the muscle strength and balance of older people.
The expert adds that if someone has fallen, the physiotherapist will prescribe exercises specifically to improve their balance.
However, Ms Johnston added: "For people who haven't fallen, it's about keeping active, keeping mobile and trying to aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity a day."
She noted that Tai Chi is a great way for active older people to keep fit, although less active older people should consider it carefully and put their concerns to an instructor.
Meanwhile, an update of the American Geriatrics Society and the British Geriatric Society's guidelines on preventing falls now states that all intervention for doing so should involve exercise.
