Specialist nurses should be employed as a standard by primary care trusts to assist with cancer treatment, it has been claimed.
Those in specialist nursing jobs provide expert clinical care, as well as continuity from the first diagnosis, according to the Royal College of Nursing (RCN).
The comments were in response to Department of Health's new strategy for cancer, to improve treatment throughout the UK, as well as tackling survival and mortality rates compared to the European average.
RCN chief executive Dr Peter Carter explained: "The RCN believes every patient with a long-term condition should have guaranteed access to one-to-one specialist nursing care.
"There is a wealth of evidence that specialist support improves patient care while saving the NHS money."
He also underlined the emotional support specialist nurses can provide, in addition to clinical expertise, praising the report for its recognition of the importance of nursing care.
