Scientists have discovered two genes linked to heart disease that could help those at risk of cardiac conditions.
Researchers studied the DNA of people with coronary artery disease (CAD) and of those without and found ADAMTS7, a gene associated with the build up of plaque in the arteries leading to the heart.
The study, published in The Lancet, also discovered a link between the ABO blood group gene and heart disease.
Muredach Reilly told Web MD: "People with this blood type appear to have some mild protection against heart attack, but genes are just one part of the story."
This comes after surgeons warned of an upcoming surge in valvular heart disease due to the UK's aging population.
Four million people will be in the 75-84 age group within the next few years, which is certain to cause an increase in the number of age related illnesses medical professionals are required to cope with.
