Taking 10,000 steps a day could reduce the risk of diabetes, new findings show.
Research, published in journal BMJ, found that those who increased the number of steps they took over five years and built up to 10,000 steps per day had better insulin sensitivity as well as less belly fat and a lower body mass index.
Participants were subjected to questions about their lifestyle at the beginning of the study along with a physical exam and asked to wear pedometers to count the number of steps taken each day.
Those who built up to 10,000 steps per day and continued to walk this far each day exhibited a threefold improvement in their insulin sensitivity compared to those who increased their steps to 3,000 per day.
"These findings, confirming an independent beneficial role of higher daily step count on body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, and insulin sensitivity, provide further support to promote higher physical activity levels among middle-aged adults," concluded the authors.
Meanwhile, research by the Scripps Translational Science Institute found that despite many medical professionals criticising the practise of personalised genetic testing, most patients are in favour of the process.
