Drawing on the expertise of those in physiotherapy jobs during the early stages of multiple sclerosis (MS) can help to strengthen muscles, it has been claimed.
Strengthening muscles that are not affected by MS can help the body compensate for those that are weakened, while physiotherapy can also help to improve the function of those impaired by the condition, according to PhysioFunction.
The organisation's clinical director, Jon Graham, explained that those in physiotherapy jobs can also be effective at relieving pain caused by muscle contractions.
He noted: "Physiotherapy can assist with management of fatigue through education of sufferers on pacing their activity and by using technology such as Functional Electrical Stimulation to activate and strengthen weak muscles."
Recent research published by the National MS Society indicated that the increased likelihood of women possessing a specific gene could explain why females are more at risk of suffering form MS than men.
