Those being trained for doctor, nurse and occupational therapy jobs need to have access to better pain management training, it has been claimed.
Charity Action on Pain has suggested that not enough training is devoted to pain management, with many patients finding themselves unprepared for the side effects of medication they are prescribed.
The comments come after research by the Patients Association revealed that over half of patients treated on the NHS are unsure about the potential side effects of pain management.
Nearly a third were found to be unsure about how to properly use their prescribed medication, leading to calls for further education for health professionals on pain treatment.
Action on Pain chair Ian Semmons claims that the UK needs a national policy for pain management.
However, he noted that it should be the obligation of primary care trusts to implement these policies, adding that the priority should first be to improve training for healthcare professionals.
