Recommending home dialysis could help those in hospital doctor jobs to better manage their patient workload.
Patients who return to dialysis in the hospital after a kidney transplant failure are just as likely to survive as those that opt for the treatment at home, according to research conducted at California's St Michael Hospital.
The findings also suggest that home treatment may work out better for patients in the long-run, as it enables them to live "a relatively flexible lifestyle, including travel".
Commenting on the study, which was prompted by concern over the number of patients forced to return to dialysis owing to failed transplants, lead researcher Dr Jeffrey Perl said: "It is important to empower patients who have kidney transplant failure to realise that despite the severe disappointment of returning to dialysis, they still have many options for dialysis therapy, which include opportunities for home-based therapies."
Recent research by PhD student Elhuyar Fundazioa suggests that the way patients cope with kidney transplant failure can be key to determining their quality of life on dialysis.
She noted that patient adaptation, the role of family, and the differences between types of dialysis are all important factors bearing on quality of life.
