Progress is being made in the development of a vaccine for methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) following bone and joint surgery, according to scientists.
Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center for Musculoskeletal Research were able to prevent the MRSA bacteria from growing in mice by breaking through the bacteria's surface.
The study has identified four anti glucosaminidase (GMD) monoclonal antibodies that disrupt the growth of MRSA bacteria by preventing cell division.
"A vaccine in humans would probably not be a foolproof approach to preventing infection 100 per cent of the time," study leader Edward Schwarz said.
"However, even if we could reduce the risk of MRSA by 35 per cent, that would be an enormous improvement in the field."
Meanwhile, the Infectious Diseases Society of America has released new guidelines stating that antibiotics are not needed to treat all cases of MRSA as overuse is culminating in the threat of resistance.
