Inhaling smoke causes genetic damage within minutes after inhalation, rather than years, according to a study.
The findings, published in Chemical Research in Toxicology, have been described as "a stark warning" to those considering starting smoking.
Scientists founds that phenanthrene rapidly forms a toxic substance in the blood that trashes DNA, causing mutations which can lead to cancer.
"It is the first to investigate human metabolism of a PAH specifically delivered by inhalation in cigarette smoke, without interference by other sources of exposure such as air pollution or the diet," explained author Stephen Hecht.
Meanwhile, health secretary Andrew Lansley has announced a new cancer strategy aiming to save 5,000 lives by 2014/15.
Improving Outcomes - A Strategy for Cancer will be funded by a sum of £750 million over a period of four years.
The scheme aims to diagnose cancer earlier, screen more people and ensure that every patient enjoys access to the best possible treatment.
