Gut bacteria could play a key role in determining a person's risk of becoming obese, according to new research.
Bacteria present in the gut could be the key to those in dietician jobs controlling obesity in patients.
Deficiency in a particular receptor used by mammals to recognise microbes in the intestines has been linked to gastrointestinal problems in a study by researchers at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, US.
A deficiency in the toll-like receptor 2 (TLr2) may lead to changes in gut bacteria in that resemble those of lean members of the same mammalian species, including humans.
Commenting on the findings, lead researcher Richard Kellermayer underlined the significance of the results, which could prove key to those in dietician jobs.
He added: "Our work highlights the remarkable capacity for an orchestrated reprogramming of the intestinal inflammatory network to overcome significant genetic challenges in the mammalian bowel.
"The appropriate exploitation of this remarkable capacity may provide means for the prevention and optimised treatment of common metabolic and gastrointestinal disorders."
Earlier this month, health secretary Andrew Lansley unveiled a new initiative to encourage families to eat healthier meals, providing them with access to £50 worth of vouchers that can be used to purchase healthy meals.
