Should occupational therapy follow false-positive mammograms?

False-positive mammograms can severely impact quality of life among women, research shows.
Women that receive false-positive mammograms suffer from high anxiety, while those in occupational therapy jobs may see their quality of life affected.
Women that received such diagnoses, when a mammogram is abnormal but no cancer is present, were likely to need more diagnostic procedures than women with breast cancer before being given the all clear, according to researchers at Tilburg University.
Commenting on the findings, which are published in the British Journal of Surgery, lead author Lideke van der Steeg explained: "The women who received false-positives in our study experienced a significant reduction in their quality of life, especially if they were prone to anxiety, and the effects of this lasted at least a year."
In fact, she noted that women that received false-positive results - likely in about 60 per cent of cases - with a propensity for anxiety responded worse "than if they were actually diagnosed with breast cancer".
Recent research published by the Radiological Society of North America suggested that starting regular breast cancer screening at age 40 among women reduced mastectomy risk.
