Health secretary Andrew Lansley has announced a new cancer strategy, which aims to save 5,000 lives per year by 2014/15.
Improving Outcomes - A Strategy for Cancer has been backed with more than £750 million over a period of four years.
Aims include diagnosing cancer earlier, helping people to lead healthier lives, screening more people, increasing the number of screening programmes and ensuring that every patient enjoys access to the best possible treatment, care and support.
Mr Lansley said the initiative is important as cancer affects everyone.
"The coalition government's reforms of health and care services will drive improvements in what matters most to patients and their families - cancer outcomes. Our commitment is to save 5,000 extra lives a year from 2014/15 and that is what we will be measuring our success against."
This comes after research published in the Lancet Journal found that UK cancer survival rates are lagging behind those of the rest of Europe.
