Statins could increase the chance of stroke recurrence in patients who suffered a haemorrhagic stroke, according to research.
Scientists at the Harvard Medical School in Boston found that those who experienced a haemorrhagic stroke, involving bleeding in the brain, faced a higher risk of recurrence if they were taking statins.
It was found that statins, used to combat heart disease, could raise the chance of another stroke in these patients from 14 per cent to 22 per cent.
The report authors wrote: "Because intracerebral haemorrhage sufferers commonly have co-morbid [co-occurring] cardiovascular risk factors that would otherwise warrant cholesterol-lowering medication, it is important to weigh the risks and benefits of statin therapy in this population."
Meanwhile, researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm found that women who ate more than three servings of fish per week were 16 per cent less likely to experience a stroke than those consuming less than one portion.
