A protein used in antioxidant therapies could also increase cardiac risks in patients, according to new research.
Research by scientists at the University of California - Los Angeles indicates that the protein could also raise plasma cholesterol levels, while contributing to the increased development of atherosclerosis.
The protein Nrf2 is considered effective at improving anti-inflammatory response and for inhibiting carcinogens, by attaching to specific sequences of DNA.
Owing to the beneficial properties of the protein, the results of the findings were described as a surprise by principal research Dr Jesus Araujo.
He noted: "The atherosclerosis-producing factors were greater than the antioxidant benefits.
"The development of novel antioxidant therapies is quite important, and this research may help shed light on why treatments affecting this protein may not be as effective as we thought."
In May, research by scientists at Sweden's Karolinska Institutet suggested that a new vaccine to combat atherosclerosis could boost cholesterol immune defence.
