Arthritis patients are given drugs when other therapies would be more beneficial, according to one analysis.
WebMD reports that researchers from the University of Sydney in Australia concluded in their analysis, published in Arthritis Care & Research, that doctors tend to hold back from prescribing exercise or weight loss therapy in favour of drugs or surgery.
"Weight management and exercise programs tend to be overlooked by clinicians," said David Hunter, author of the analysis.
"These conservative approaches are beneficial to patients who adhere to weight loss and exercise programs."
Mr Hunter continues that doctors' failure to attempt more conservative treatment leads to unnecessary imaging and referrals.
Meanwhile, a study published in journal Arthritis & Rheumatism claims that those with early rheumatoid arthritis who smoke are less likely to respond well to treatment than those who do not.
