Refer an Phlebotomist
Friday 7th January 2011
Researchers from Scripps Research Institute used synthetic compounds to 'fish' for antibodies in the blood that increase when a person has a specific disease.
Three of these compounds were successful in detecting Alzheimer's, indicating they could be used for future diagnosis.
However, the scientists have pointed out that the testing is at a very early stage and further research will be needed to see whether the test holds promise for those with Alzheimer's disease.
Dr Susanne Sorensen, head of research at the Alzheimer's Society, said that a simple blood test to diagnose Alzheimer's would be invaluable.
"However, this research is in the early stages and more investigation is needed to find out it if it can be developed in to a reliable and practical test for the future," she added.
Meanwhile, researchers from the University of Illinois have discovered a drug target in the brain that could revolutionise the treatment of Alzheimer's.
