Old pandemic vaccines released to stem flu jab shortage

Stockpiles of pandemic vaccine left over from last year's H1N1 outbreak are being released to cover the shortage of flu vaccines around the nation.
Amid reports of those in high-risk groups being turned away from some surgeries due to a diminishing supply of the flu vaccine, government officials reassured the public that there was no national shortage.
However, vaccines left over from 2009's swine flu pandemic have been released in an effort to solve the problem.
Geoff Martin, chairman of anti-cuts campaign group Health Emergency warned that these vaccines only cover the H1N1 virus, not any other flu strains.
"There's a real danger that people will think they are protected when they are not and that's down to the fact the government has got this completely wrong," he said.
In addition, reports are claiming that 50 people have died from flu this winter, 45 of which had swine flu and five from type B.
