Register as an Dietitian
Tuesday 4th January 2011
Health secretary Andrew Lansley has announced an initiative designed to help families eat healthily, in a move which if effective could make the jobs of dieticians much easier.
The new plans, part of the Change4Life healthy living campaign, will give parents health tips, help and advice.
With families being encouraged to swap at least one unhealthy habit for a better one, the government is hoping to change one million unhealthy lifestyles.
Access to £50 worth of vouchers for money off healthier foods and leisure activities, healthy family recipes for snacks and mealtimes and nutritional and exercise advice will all be given through the Great Swapathon scheme.
Mr Lansley said: "The healthy option isn't always the cheapest option so it's a really important step to be able to offer £50 off healthier foods, drinks and activities."
Meanwhile, researchers from Detroit's Wayne State University have found that the heaviest nine-month-olds tend to become the heaviest two-year-olds, reports WebMD.
This indicates a potential link between chubbiness in babies and future childhood obesity.
