Leaders in the field of speech therapy have welcomed an upcoming film that looks set to raise awareness of stuttering.
The King's Speech, featuring Colin Firth, tells the story of King George VI who had to overcome his stutter when his older brother abdicated the British throne.
The British Stammering Association's Chief Executive Norbert Lieckfeldt told Boots WebMD that he deeply identified with the film.
"The first time I saw the movie I came out totally exhausted. The whole time I was doing sympathetic phantom blocking along with him," he said.
Glen Tellis, professor and chair of the speech-language pathology programme at Misericordia University in Pennsylvania, said that there is a lot of positive buzz surrounding the film within the field.
He explained: "It's one of the first movies to depict people who stutter in a good light."
The film is directed by Tom Hooper and stars Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter alongside Firth.
