UK cancer survival rates 'lagging behind'

UK cancer survival rates are lagging behind those of the rest of Europe, according to a new study.
Research published in the Lancet Journal found that although a record number of people are now surviving cancer, rates were lowest in the UK and Denmark.
Professor Sir Mike Richards, the government's National Clinical Director for Cancer, said that steps to improve cancer survival rates are already in place.
"In England we have already started work on improving early diagnosis, including a new campaign starting next month to alert people to the early signs and symptoms of bowel, lung and breast cancer and plans to give GPs more direct access to key diagnostic tests," he explained.
These findings are backed up by a study by the Association of Public Health Observatories which found that female cancer death rates in the UK are among Europe's worst.
This EU-wide survey also found that the West Midlands and the North-East of England are the most overweight regions in the whole of the European Union, with almost a third of adults classed as obese.
