Individuals with psoriasis are more likely to have higher risk factors for heart disease and diabetes, a study has shown.
Researchers from Landspitali University Hospital, Reykjavik, Iceland, looked at previous research and found that individual features of the metabolic syndrome including obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and high total cholesterol and triglycerides are more prevalent in those with psoriasis.
The study, published in Archives of Dermatology, found that 40 per cent of people had features of metabolic syndrome in comparison with a control group, where just 23 per cent of participants showed symptoms.
"These findings from a nationally representative sample of US adults show a doubling in the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome among patients with psoriasis independent of age, sex, race/ethnicity and C-reactive protein levels," the authors stated.
Meanwhile, surgeons have warned of an increase in valvular heart disease due to the UK's aging population.
