The health secretary has called for more people to donate their blood due as stocks are running out due to transportation difficulties caused by the arctic weather conditions.
Speaking at the West End Blood Donor Centre, health secretary Andrew Lansley said: "Giving blood is an incredibly generous act and I am grateful to the millions of people who give blood every year. The NHS needs 7,000 units of blood every day, regardless of the weather."
Group O negative is particularly important as it can be given to patients with other blood groups.
Jon Latham, assistant director of Blood Donation at NHSBT, added that the NHS is trying to make sure most of the blood donation sessions go ahead.
To encourage people to give blood, the NHS runs a Whole Blood Donor Award Scheme which gives donators various rewards in the forms of cards, keyrings and even a decanter when a person reaches 100 donations.
