Surgeons call for quicker turn around and less waste

Orthapedic surgeons have called for a quicker turn-around of patients to reduce waiting times in a new report published by the NHS Confederation.
The medical professionals said that when a patient waits a long time for surgery, too many interventions of limited benefits to patients occur.
Clinicians were also worried about variations in patient discharge practices, with unnecessary stays racking up extra cost for hospitals. For example, professionals note that myths about not letting a newborn infant go home until it had reached a certain weight were still prevalent.
In addition, the British Society of Neurological Surgeons was worried about the waste of medical supplies, commenting that the CJD scare led to policies forcing surgeons to dispose of instruments after just one use.
Hugo Mascie-Taylor the NHS Confederation's clinical director said: "The NHS is facing up to the need to save as much as £20 billion in the next four years so suggestions like these from some of the most respected clinicians in their field simply have to be taken seriously."
Meanwhile, surgeons have predicted a surge in valvular heart disease due to the aging nature of the UK's population.
