Surgeons warn of increase in valvular heart disease

Surgeons have warned of an upcoming surge in valvular heart disease due to the UK's aging population.
Four million people will be within the 75 to 84 age bracket within the next few years, which is certain to have an effect on the incidence of age-related illnesses medical professionals are required to cope with.
Despite this, experts from Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital, London's St Thomas' Hospital and the University Hospital of South Manchester have warned that the UK is not well prepared for more cases of valvular heart disease.
The researchers wrote in Heart Journal: "These observations suggest that both initial diagnoses and subsequent follow up are currently inadequate and that patients are routinely referred late in the natural history of the condition, beyond the window where surgery is of maximum benefit."
This comes after news that the progression of Alzheimer's disease has been tracked in a man with an early-onset form of the condition, using PET scans.
