Radiographers could see reduced rates of skin cancer in future generations, as sun safety messages appear to be having an effect.
Dr Elizabeth Rapley, spokesperson for the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), said that melanoma is easily treated when caught early.
She added: "Older generations, for whom the sun damage has already occurred, need to be educated about the signs and symptoms of malignant melanoma and to seek medical advice promptly if there is concern."
However, Dr Rapley said the sun safety message does seem to be getting through to younger generations, meaning that the high mortality rates among pensioners should decrease in the future.
According to Cancer Research UK, failure to get moles and skin abnormalities checked by a doctor has contributed to a sharp rise in deaths from malignant melanoma among over 65s, with pensioners now three times more likely to die from one compared to 30 years ago.
