Professionals in cardiac jobs have found a genetic link between heart attacks and Alzheimer's.
A common genetic predisposition was found in 30 per cent of heart attack sufferers and 40 per cent of people with Alzheimer's in the University of Bologna research.
Published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, the study supports existing evidence of a link between the two diseases.
Commenting on the findings, lead researcher Federico Licastro explained: "We have now been able to identify a genetic profile of several genes partially common to both diseases.
"This is the leap in quality that now enables us to conduct a test and assess a profile partially specific to both diseases."
Recent research by the British Society for Heart Failure indicated that treatment by a professional in a UK cardiac job can dramatically reduce the likelihood of death in heart failure patients.
The findings also reveal that treatment on a specialised cardiac ward also has a positive impact on mortality rates.
