Access to specialist treatment by those working in UK cardiac jobs in England and Wales has a dramatic impact on mortality rates, according to new figures.
Mortality rates among heart failure patients fell by nine percentage points when they were seen by professionals in UK cardiac jobs, the British Society for Heart Failure indicated.
In-patient mortality was also twice as likely for these patients if they were on a non-cardiac ward.
Commenting on the findings, the organisation's chair, Dr Theresa McDonagh, explained: "Outcomes for these patients can be significantly improved by having specialist cardiology input to their care, administration of appropriate evidence-based doses of key drugs and follow-up by specialist services."
Recent research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggested that regular exercise can help to improve the quality of life of chronic heart failure patients.
The findings were drawn from a comprehensive clinical trial, which also suggested that exercise may also lower the risk of death.
