Register as an Dietitian
Monday 13th December 2010
Professionals in UK medical jobs should receive more training to enable them to better identify people at risk of gaining weight, it has been claimed.
The plea by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) was made amid growing concern about the dramatic increase in the number of obese and overweight Brits over the last two decades.
In particular, there are worries that attention is not being paid to younger people - a demographic where enhanced obesity care is "most needed", according to the RCP.
Chair of the working party that compiled the report on the issue for the RCP, Peter Kopelman, explained: "Regardless of the particular discipline of the health professional, or the setting in which he/she works, the message that needs to be heard is that 'managing overweight and obesity is everybody's business'."
Earlier this month, a survey by the RCP suggested that there needs to be an increase in the number of senior doctors available across UK hospitals to deal with patients on acute admissions units.
