NHS urged to boost hospital doctors jobs positions

The number of consultant doctors jobs available across the NHS may need to be increased to cope with the additional strain that is being put on hospitals.
Hospital admissions, junior doctors being constrained by the European Working Time Directive and fewer consultant posts being created are all contributing to a growing problem across hospitals, according to the Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (RCP).
In particular, there is concern that increases in opportunities within cardiology and gastroenterology have not matched UK medical jobs made available in acute and geriatric medicine.
Commenting on the trend, RCP president Sir Richard Thompson explained that high levels of care will only be sustained for patients if there continues to be an increase in the number of vacancies.
Earlier this month, Sir Richard suggested that hospitals have an obligation to patients to ensure that there are enough staff to provide a consistent level of care across weekends and in the evenings.
