Nurses may need to help those aged over 65 to check their moles for signs of skin cancer.
Safety and early detection messages still need to be more widely promoted when it comes to skin health, according to the British Skin Foundation.
The organisation's Bevis Man explained that in the case of the elderly, they "simply might not be able to check themselves physically or have access to someone that can help".
He noted: "Whatever targeted awareness programs are done in the future, we have to ensure that those messages reach this age group successfully, as the elderly may not be exposed to the same forms of media that younger generations are, such as the likes of Twitter and Facebook."
His comments follow the publication of new findings from Cancer Research UK, which indicates that a failure to get moles and skin changes checked out by a doctor has contributed to a steep rise in malignant melanoma deaths among pensioners.
