Tackling alcohol consumption may require 'bold new measures'

Practitioners in occupational therapy jobs may share growing concerns about higher levels of alcohol consumption in the UK.
The government is being urged to take "bold new measures" to reduce levels of consumption in the UK, by national alcohol misuse agency Alcohol Concern.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics indicate that alcoholic drink expenditure by the average family is around £14 per week, more than half of which was bought and consumed on licensed premises.
The agency's chief executive, Don Shenker, explained that these figures contradict other reports that alcohol consumption is falling.
He said consumption has been "rising sharply over past decades", adding that the simplest way to achieve reductions would be to prevent supermarkets from selling alcoholic products at such low prices.
Last week, the British Medical Association criticised the government for not going far enough to encourage healthier living with its Healthy Lives, Healthy People white paper.
