Multiple miscarriages could alert cardiologists to heart attack risk

Patients that have endured multiple miscarriages may need to see a cardiologist, as they could be at a higher risk of a heart attack, according to research.
Scientists from the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg found that women who had had more than three miscarriages were five times more likely to have a heart attack.
They studied data from over 11,500 women aged between their mid-30s and mid-60s, comparing the pregnancy history of those who had had heart attacks with the rate of miscarriages in other women.
Taking into consideration other factors such as weight, smoking and their consumption of alcohol, researchers found a more than 500 per cent increased risk of a heart attack.
Miscarriages should alert cardiologists to possible future problems, the authors said.
Professor Gordon Smith, from Cambridge University told the BBC that the cause and effect of this statistic is not yet fully understood.
"It is possible that there is some common predisposing risk factor for both miscarriage and heart disease. During pregnancy, it is manifested by increased risk of miscarriage, and later in life, it manifests itself as an increase in heart disease risk," he said.
This comes after the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery announced that UK cardiac surgeons are among the best in Europe.
