Rise in number of medical staff on new contract

There has been a rise in those in specialist UK medical jobs such as newborn hearing screeners, operating on the new contract with numbers doubling in the past year, according to findings.
A British Medical Association survey of doctors reported by BMJ found that almost 71 per cent of associate specialists and 64 per cent of staff grade and speciality doctors has opted for the new contract, which was introduced in April 2008.
In comparison, only 37 per cent of associate specialists and 64 per cent of staff grade and speciality doctors such as those in newborn hearing screener jobs, had transferred to the new contract in 2009.
Also, doctors in Wales were found to be the most likely to be working on the new contract, with those in Northern Ireland the least.
Most said the reason for not transferring was due to better terms and conditions on the current contract.
The survey also found that there was no change in overall job satisfaction, with levels of motivation among staff and associate specialists actually falling.
