Following the government's White Paper Healthy Lives, Healthy People, the British Medical Association (BMA) has said that more action should be taken.
The organisation agrees that nudging people in the right direction in terms of their health could be more effective than forcing them to lead a healthy lifestyle, but more needs to be done to stop those in UK cardiac jobs being burdened by patients with obesity related illnesses.
Dr Vivienne Nathanson, director of professional activities at the BMA, said that action should be taken in other industries.
"If people live in an environment where they are surrounded by fast food advertising and glamorous alcohol marketing, nudging will have a limited effect. We need an environment that helps us make healthy choices and sometimes tougher action is needed to achieve this," she said.
This comes after health secretary Andrew Lansley unveiled Public Health England - a scheme designed to localise health care and medical budgets throughout the country.
