Government 'must ensure medical graduates have jobs'

The government must ensure graduates seeking UK medical jobs will be able to find work, according to doctors' leaders.
This comes after news that applications for next year's foundation programme exceed available vacancies in the area, with 184 more applicants from final year medical students than places in the programme.
The news could severely impact on those wanting UK cardiology jobs and an overflowing health service could force individuals to turn to locum doctor jobs if they cannot find permanent work.
Karin Purshouse, chair of the British Medical Association's Medical Students Committee pointed out that the taxpayer spends £226,000 training each medical student.
"This public investment will be lost if medical graduates are not able to begin treating patients, especially as they are legally required to undertake this important first post before being able to practice fully as a doctor," she said.
Meanwhile, UK cardiac surgeons in the NHS have been found to be among the best in Europe, according to the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery.
