UK cardiac surgeons 'among best in Europe'

Those in UK cardiac jobs are among the best in Europe, according to a new study.
The European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery found that the NHS is one of the best organisations for cardiac surgery.
A report carried out by the organisation showed that England and Wales had 25 per cent fewer deaths after operations.
In addition, patients were found to be discharged from hospital two days earlier than the European average.
Sir Bruce Keogh, NHS medical firector and former president of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland, said that government budgets do not influence the survival rates of cardiac operations.
"This report clearly demonstrates that we should be proud of heart surgery in England. The survival rates of our heart surgery have improved as a result of a relentless focus on the science, technology, surgical skill and teamwork of heart surgery," he said.
Meanwhile, a study published in the British Medical Journal found that men in Northern Ireland are twice as likely to suffer a heart attack as those in France.
