Regional cancer spending-gap revealed

A cancer-spending gap has been revealed, showing that primary care trusts (PCTs) varied in how much they spent per 1,000 members of the population.
This figure ranged from over £40,000 in some areas to less than £20,000 in others, with high spending regions including Yorkshire, Cambridgeshire, Northumberland, Lincolnshire, Devon, Suffolk and Norfolk. London, Durham and Derbyshire were seen to be low spenders.
The gap was revealed after those in UK medical jobs created a series of maps highlighting the variation in patient care across the country.
Maps, drawn up by the NHS Right Care, focus on key conditions, intervention and outcomes and are standardised to take into account variations in age, sex and commonness of the condition.
In addition, there were large differences in how beds were used for cancer patients with some trusts choosing to keep patients in much longer than others.
This comes after CancerPartnersUK reported that cancer care has improved generally throughout the country.
