NHS staff to take control of community services

Those in UK medical jobs working for the NHS are set to take control of community services around the country, in a ground-breaking change in the system.
From April 2011, all Primary Care Trusts will have separated the commissioning of community services from their provision, with all staff being transferred to a range of new organisations.
This is intended to localise the system, which employs around 200,000 staff including those in occupational therapy jobs.
Simon Burns, minister of state for health, said that the proposals aim to give patients more choice and improved control over their own care.
"Frontline staff will be in the driving seat to improve quality and integrate services to ensure the most effective outcomes for their patients. And there will be further benefits – frontline staff are best placed to provide the most efficient services so that local NHS money goes further," he said.
This comes after the Mirror reported that the NHS is overstretched with hospital wards being closed across the country.
