High cholesterol diet 'leads to Alzheimer's symptoms'

Doctors have proposed a link between chronic high cholesterol and certain types of brain damage, following tests on rats.
Rodents that were given high fat cholesterol diets showed symptoms of pathologies similar to Alzheimer's disease in a study published in the journal Molecular Cellular Neuroscience.
A group of rats was given a five per cent cholesterol enriched diet and tested after five months for behavioural impairments, compared to a control group of rats. Those rodents fed the high cholesterol diet were found to have suffered memory impairment, inflammation, cholinergic dysfunction and other symptoms resembling Alzheimer's, researchers at the Laboratory of Psychiatry and Experimental Alzheimer's Research found.
Although a similar test has yet to be carried out to establish a similar effect on human brains, the findings will undoubtedly provide food for thought for dieticians and those in occupational therapy jobs treating patients with dementia or a high cholesterol diet.
Meanwhile, research published in August by scientists at the University of California - San Francisco indicated that proteins linked with Alzheimer's disease and other neurological conditions appear as insoluble clumps in patients' brains.
Scientists carrying out the study suggested that this clumping may be part of the normal aging process.
