999 misuse list released

A list of emergency services misuses that those in UK medical jobs have been faced with has been revealed as part of a campaign to promote respect for accident and emergency and the 999 number.
Incidents include a woman asking staff to remove her false nails, a patient requesting someone cut her toe nails and a drunk man who turned up by ambulance after his wife locked him out of the house.
The release of the list, from NHS North West, came as part of a campaign aiming to get the public to only use the 999 number when necessary.
Dr Mike Cheshire, Medical Director at NHS North West said: "I think that we need to get back to the message that A&E departments are for life-threatening and emergency conditions, such as heart attacks, strokes, breathing problems and serious accidents."
Figures showed that unnecessary visits to accident and emergency departments in the North West are costing the region approximately £79.25 million per year.
