The age-old structure of a doctors surgery could be altered under new proposals which would mean patients would have to ring a national call centre to see their GP.
New government proposals, which could dramatically alter some UK medical jobs, would mean that doctors' receptionists would face the sack and be replaced by national call centres.
The centralising of bookings would mean that many people could be out of jobs in surgeries around the country.
Doctors and surgery staff have criticised the idea while others fear that the service will no longer be personal enough.
Potentially, these workers could also become responsible for handling repeat prescriptions, affecting pharmacy jobs.
The government has argued that the changes would save money and allow it to be spent where it is really needed.
This comes after news that the first hospital management system to be based on cloud computing has been launched by Meddservice.
