An experimental pump designed to prolong the life of patients with advanced heart-failure looks set to revolutionise UK cardiac jobs.
The pump, which weighs 5oz, works as well as approved devices to assist heart patients while they wait for a transplant or recover, according to a new study.
The HeartWare HVAD Left Ventricular Assist Device System for the Treatment of Advanced Heart Failure (ADVANCE) study found that 92 per cent of patients survived for 180 days with the pump.
This compares to 90 per cent of patients waiting for heart transplants who were using already-approved pumps were also treated successfully.
Keith Aaronson, lead investigator and cardiologist at the University of Michigan Medical Center, said that these results were very promising.
Bloomberg reported him as saying: "The quality of life for these patients nearly doubled and increased to a level seen in heart transplant patients."
