The government has announced that it is planning to move spending power within the NHS from managers to GPs, health secretary Andrew Lansley announced today.
In effect, this means that GPs will be responsible for deciding how money for patients is spent - accounting for £80 billion of the NHS's £100 billion budget.
Mr Lansley argued that this change, which will take place over the next two years, will give GPs greater freedom to do what they think is best and put an end to a system which is currently "frustrating the changes GPs could make".
However, some people in UK medical jobs are worried that this could interfere with doctor-patient relationships as patients could now worry whether their doctor is acting in their best interest or thinking about the money.
Mr Lansley insisted the decision was a risk not a necessity, saying: "I don't think it's a gamble. I think it would be a greater gamble not to reform."
